La Fin: I've finished remaking all the websites in H2O: Just Add Water
Amusingly, as I write this, I’ve just realized we’re coming up on the 20th anniversary of H2O: Just Add Water, which first aired on July 7th, 2006.
A little over a year ago, I published a post (“I wasted $410 recreating a fake website that shows up for 10 seconds of a TV show almost no one remembers “) about having re-created a website that showed up for a few seconds in an episode “H2O: Just Add Water”. In the title I described it as “…a TV show almost no one remembers”, which was evidently incorrect, because after posting on Mastodon I discovered that it seemed to be widely known amongst German audiences.
There’s one more fake website that appears in H2O: Just Add Water: greekmythicalcreatures.com
It appears for 188 frames in the pilot episode, Season 1 Episode 1 “Metamorphosis”, on a re-labeled Apple iMac G5 in the JuiceNet Café, while Lewis is researching mermaids after being asked “Do you know anything about mermaids?” by Cleo.
The site ended up being a lot easier (and cheaper) than mermaidmyths.com, since all the art was from 15th-17th century woodcut engraving prints in the public domain. I was, unfortunately, not able to quite match the header banner text. The font is very close to “Chopin Script” and “Polonaise”, but isn’t either because the behaviour of the ascenders and descenders don’t match. I suspect it was from a banner generator built into a contemporary piece of photo editing software (or maybe a webpage generator like Dreamweaver?). In any case, I found that the classic site CoolText.com had a very close text generator that used Chopin Script, and I just used that. It’s not perfect, but it’s close.
That’s all the “real” websites (sites with real web addresses) from H2O: Just Add Water, so there’s nothing else H2O-related for me to make. I plan to keep these up in perpetuity so people watching and re-watching the series can have a fun little Easter egg to wander into.
I’d like to add a little hidden place you can click to play a lo-fi synthesizer rendition of “No Ordinary Girl”, the theme song, but unfortunately tracker synths are beyond my skillset.
If you liked this project, consider supporting me on Ko-fi.
